Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How many driving lessons are actually required? How long does the exam take? Is there a remedy for test anxiety?
You’ll find answers to these questions here.

How many driving lessons are required?

There are no official requirements for the number of driving lessons. However, you must be able to complete a safe, law-abiding test drive with the examiner. This requires a thorough and careful education. Private driving practice is also very helpful in building up routine and experience.

My father only needed 10 lessons—why?

Road traffic has increased enormously over the past 20 years! In addition, there is often hectic activity and lack of consideration on the roads. The requirements for the driving test are much higher than years ago. New challenges include double roundabouts, correct lane changes, and proper shoulder checks before turning. Today, ecological driving and consideration for cyclists and pedestrians are also given high importance.

A friend of mine only needed 12 lessons?

Not impossible, for sure. But often, people understate the actual number of lessons to appear more skilled. Or perhaps they drove privately every day and on weekends, gaining extra practice. In any case, a lot of private practice is very helpful and strongly recommended.

How long does the driving test take?

The practical test in St. Gallen and Appenzell AR lasts 60 minutes (pure driving time); in Appenzell AI, it lasts 45 minutes. Vehicle knowledge will also be tested!

Exam fees: Appenzell AR/AI: CHF 100.– / St. Gallen: CHF 150.–

With which vehicle do I take the test?

Usually with the driving school’s vehicle, as you became familiar with it during your training. In rare cases, with your own car.

Remedy for test anxiety?

A solid, thorough education and two successful mock exams at the driving school are the goal. Many private driving sessions also provide safety and confidence, helping you get used to road traffic and to operate the car in a relaxed way.
