The Electronic Learner’s Permit (eLFA)

What you should know about the electronic learner’s permit (eLFA)

The electronic learner’s permit (eLFA) is being gradually introduced in Switzerland. Starting in summer 2025, the pilot project is set to be extended to all cantons. It will first be launched as a pilot project in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The eLFA is a digital version of the learner’s permit and is stored on your smartphone.

What is the eLFA?

The electronic learner’s permit (eLFA) is the digital version of the traditional paper learner’s permit. It is stored directly on your smartphone, usually in the wallet app, and can be presented via QR code during checks or driving lessons. The permit is valid throughout Switzerland and in the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Pilot project in Appenzell Ausserrhoden

  • Start: Pilot launched in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in April/May 2024
  • Test run for the E-ID: The eLFA serves as a technical test for the later introduction of the electronic identity (E‑ID)

Extension from summer 2025

  • Summer 2025: The project will expand to the cantons of Bern, Neuchâtel, and Valais, followed by Zug
  • Goal: By the end of 2025, the eLFA should be available in all 26 cantons.

Validity & Usage

  • The eLFA is valid throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
  • It is free of charge – the fees are included in the paper permit.
  • You still need to keep the paper permit as long as there is no legal basis for the fully digital version.
  • Checks: Driving schools, police, or authorities can verify validity via QR code or the “LicenceCheck” web application.
  • Device change: If you change your phone, you need to reapply for the eLFA – it is linked to the device.
